Cheap Thrills

We went to Appomattox one Easter weekend. We were there on the anniversary of the surrender of the Confederacy which opened the way for reunification of the United States. It took place in the courthouse at Appomattox and it was a solemn event for us as we stood outside the courthouse and listened to the silence that early Spring morning.

On the courthouse porch was a cat . . .chasing a mouse. Down the stairs, into the long grass, around the house and out of sight.

Ask Sara what, if anything, she remembers of our trip to Civil War historical sites. Her answer would be the cat. The mouse. We could have saved a lot of money if we had known this beforehand. We would have sent her out to play with the neighbor's cat!

On that same note, we went with Adam and the boys to Lagoon. Not a short drive from where we live and not a cheap thrill. Lagoon has gotten a little pricey since . . . well, since 1980 . . .something.

For all the fun, whizzing, food, and amusement, this is what Joshua found the most intriguing-

it's a bee.

Not a cat, not a mouse, but a bee-same difference. I love kids.

Seeing Eye to Eye

My dad is 86 years old and has just returned home from the hospital. Somewhere between my childhood and the present, I must have quit seeing him age. In my mind's eye, he is still almost six feet tall, as strong as an ox, and a great tease. I see his humongous hands, now atrophied with age and I wonder when that happened. When did my dad become "elderly"?

As I helped him get settled into his recliner, following his hospital stay, I looked directly into his eyes-we are now the same height. I'm thankful to have the opportunity to see eye to eye with a great man.
